In response to the devastating November 2021 floods that severely damaged Highway 5 infrastructure, the Ministry of Transportation and Transit, working alongside Lower Nicola Indian Band, Nooaitch Indian Band, and industry partners, transformed emergency repairs into a model for ecological restoration. While urgent works such as riprap installation, bridge replacements, and new access points temporarily increased impacts to fish habitat, the team leveraged Fisheries Act and Water Sustainability Act authorizations to deliver measurable environmental gains. Ecoscape led the development and implementation of a river-aligned design that incorporated large woody debris structures, enhanced side channels, cold-water refugia, and extensive riparian planting. The project delivered 26,339 m² of new instream habitat and restored 28,345 m² of riparian area, substantially exceeding regulatory requirements. Through close regulatory collaboration and meaningful Indigenous partnership, the program achieved a net gain of instream and riparian habitat, creating climate-resilient fish habitat and a replicable, nature-based recovery model.
As natural resource professionals, we have a deep appreciation for the fundamental values and principles shared by Indigenous People of living harmoniously with the land, water, and resources. We embrace the opportunity to learn from Indigenous People continually and to understand their cultural and spiritual connection to the land.
